The Essence of Sports Psychology

The Essence of Sports Psychology

This is where sports psychology comes into play. The first sports psychologist, Normal Triplett, discovered in the late 1800′s that cyclists, for example, cycle faster when in groups instead of when riding solo. This is a primitive example of the observance of sports psychology and a clear view on how many different environmental, emotional, and many other aspects effect the way athletes perform.

Sports psychologist, Carl Diem stressed the importance of sports psychology, an aspect that improves both the emotional and mental strength of an athlete. These parts of psychology help motivate, relax, and build self confidence allowing the athlete to achieve top performance and accomplish all and any goals for which they set out, especially when it comes to competitions and sporting events.

Sports psychologist, Carl Diem, established the first sports psychology center in 1920.

He was a German sports administrator and was the chief organizer of the 1936 Olympic Games held in Germany. He was also the founder of the torch relay tradition in the Olympic Games. Not only was his sports psychology effective on athletes, but his methods were used during World War II to motivate the army to defend Berlin to the death.

Sports psychology, thanks to the research of some sports psychologists, helps athletes grow mentally to achieve their best performance. One should realize when participating in sports and physical activities that they should mentally prepare themselves for any upcoming challenge and figure out realistic goals which they can achieve.

When an athlete is competing in sports, they should try focusing their mind on things that keep them focused and give them an extra kick to bring themselves to victory, either in themselves or on the field or court.

Sports Performance specialists say this is one of the last frontiers for athletes. With all the new equipment and specialized training available athletes will remember that its their mind (thoughts, ideas, beliefs) that will control their bodies action. Without taking this into account you are not stacking all the odds in your performance direction. Thoughts of failure, disappointment, doubt, losing, injury and more have in the past, do today, and will in the future sabotage all the great training done. It is about removing the performance anxiety and playing at your peak level both as an individual and team.

Sports psychology is really important to the performance enhancement of any athlete, no matter what sport or physical activity. Many techniques and strategies used in therapeutic and kinesiology programs are frequently used in sports psychology research, study, and sessions. The incredible sound of an over packed stadium cheering an athlete’s name can make or break an athlete in regard to sports psychology. Therefore, the physical strength and development of an athlete is pointless without the emotional development.
